This was a door Dean thought he'd never knock on again.

It wasn't that he never thought about going back to Cicero to see Lisa and Ben. In fact, he had thought about it so many times he was surprised that he didn't do it, but given that they got Olivia so soon after things ended with Lucifer, he never had the time. He wasn't going to leave Sam hanging out to dry with a little girl, not if something big decided to come back and bite them in the ass, and not for someone he wasn't even sure wanted to see him.

Sure, she said he was welcome to stay, but she could have just been saying that to be polite. He did just save their lives after all, and he had already said he had to go. Besides, he would have just been the guy in the way. Ben wasn't his kid, and he deserved to have a father that wasn't going to drop dead in eight months.

Regardless, he was here now, and it was taking him a minute to actually get up the nerve to knock on the door. Even though he had a direct invitiation, even though he had a place there, he was still not sure that this was what he should be doing. Now, it too late for Ben to need a father, and he wanted to see Lisa, for what? For kicks? For that weekend with "Gumby Girl" that he never got all those years ago?

But he already said he was coming, and she was already expecting him. Now, all he had to do was knock. And he did.

It was dinnertime when Sam had called his daughter downstairs at least a few times with no answer. Dean of course was not going to help, out again. He sighed, heading upstairs in the three bedroom house that the Winchesters owned now, retired - mostly - from the hunting business and trying to act like civilians... as much as they could. Which meant that Sam cooked, cleaned, and basically cleaned up after his daughter and brother...

He tried to ignore the fact that their neighbors through they were a gay couple with a child. He really did.

As he got upstairs, he heard music coming from the other side of his daughter's door. He knocked hard and leaned into the crack of the door. "Olivia! Sweetie, it's dinner time."

"Not hungry!" she shouted back over the music. Olivia really wasn't in the mood to deal with her dad at the moment. Dealing with her dad always tended to result in a fight these days, and right now she had a test to study for, friends from school IMing her, and she just wasn't in the mood to have her good mood killed. "Studying. I'll get something from the fridge later.

And then the music got turned up. End of conversation.

[Completely open. If you have a verse with Dean and you want their interaction to be colored by that, just put the verse in the subject line. Otherwise, if you're non-canon, he'll treat you like he's meeting you for the first time. If you're canon, he'll treat you like he does in canon. All in good, somewhat-clean fun. The only muse mentioned here that this is binding on is Sam, who is [livejournal.com profile] likely_evil.]

It's the time of the season for kissing! Set up a kissing booth and have at it, you crazy kids. Just be careful you don't catch any diseases!

This was going to be like taking candy from a baby.

He didn't know why they hadn't thought of it sooner. All the carny jobs they'd worked over the years, and they never thought to make the easiest money they'd ever made. Well, technically it took some convincing to get Sam to do it, but, well -- Sam was a bitch anyway. That wasn't anything new. He had managed to convince Sam to do it, and now they were positioned at two different points in on the fairgrounds, girls at their sides for the male customers, sporting signs that read: Kissing Booth: $5 a Smooch.

Thought Dean wouldn't have minded being a "customer" of this particular girl himself. Angie was friendly and bubbly, and they got to talking while they waited for customers, but other than that, Dean was starting to get a little bored. Where were the chicks already?

Lisa was pacing, looking at her watch as he walked in and out of the kitchen. She was waiting for Ben, and starting to get a bit pissed off. This had been her idea - Sam, Dean, Ben and her having a nice cooked meal while Beth was on a job and Maddie was with her friends. Just a bit of family time.

And Ben was almost an hour late. "I told him not to be late today," she muttered, picking up her glass of wine again.

"Hey, it's alright," Dean said with a shrug. "I don't have anywhere to be. How 'bout you, Sammy?"

"Nope," Sam said, coming up from behind Lisa and placing a hand on her back lightly. "It's okay. Something probably came up and he couldn't call. I'm sure we'll hear from him soon."

She nodded. "Yeah, you're right. Both of you. It's just... ten years of worrying about that boy doesn't go away overnight, you know."

"Oh, trust me," Dean said with a chuckle. "We know."

[Follows THIS.]

Dean had said he'd wait by the car to give Ben and Lisa some extra time alone without him. He didn't think it was fair that he'd taken up a big chunk of the visit with his trying to get Ben to understand, plus he'd almost fucked things up royally to begin with, so he figured the least he could do was wait in the car while they said goodbye.

He was starting to feel better about his and Ben's relationship at the moment. They seemed to have talked a lot of it out, and he felt less like he'd screwed up. He still knew that he screwed up, but he wasn't as worried about it. At this point, it was something he could still fix. He leaned against the side of the car, hands in his pockets as he waited for Lisa to come out, and hoped that this conversation with her would go just as easily as the one with Ben did.

Dean stood in front of the apartment door for a long time, trying to figure out exactly what he was going to say when Ben opened it. He knew that there was nothing he could say that would make logical sense and make things better, but he was going to try at least. It wasn't totally his fault, but it wasn't Lisa's completely either -- he knew that now. That much wasn't going to change.

But he was hoping he could at least make it somewhat better.

He ran a hand over his face before moving forward knocking lightly on the door and sliding his hands back into his pockets again. This was going to be -- awkward. To say the least.
