[fanmix] Every Rose Has it's Thorn
[For
absit_omens.]

1. Somewhere Out There ~ Linda Ronstadt and James Ingraham
Somewhere out there,
Beneath the pale blue night,
Someone's thinking of me,
And loving me tonight.
Somewhere out there,
Someone's saying a prayer,
Then we'll find one another,
In that big somewhere out there.
I tried to make this mix a balance of happy songs and less than happy songs, but I’m not sure that worked out too well. Because these guys tended to be an angsty couple. I still managed to get this one, though! It’s a cute song and it works for the both of them now that they’ve gone their separate ways.

2. There’s a Fine, Fine Line ~ Avenue Q
There's a fine, fine line between a fairy tale and a lie;
And there's a fine, fine line between "You're wonderful" and "Goodbye."
I guess if someone doesn't love you back it isn't such a crime,
But there's a fine, fine line between love
And a waste of your time.
This is Dean’s whole approach to relationships. He hasn’t had the greatest track record with women, mostly because he’s him and the job he does, but he does just have a really crappy track record, even when he is upfront and honest, and he especially feels this way with Anna.

3. Piece of my Heart ~ Band from TV
Didn't I make you feel like you were the only man, well yeah,
An' didn't I give you nearly everything that a woman possibly can ?
Honey, you know I did!
And each time I tell myself that I, well I think I've had enough,
But I'm gonna show you, baby, that a woman can be tough.
This is more of an Anna song, that I wasn’t sure about including at first, but I decided that Bonnie Somerville’s version was too awesome to pass up. I think this one is also pretty self explanatory as well.

4. Braille ~ Regina Spektor
And it was raining cats and dogs out side of her window
And she knew they were destined to become
Sacred road kill on the way
And she was listening to the sound of heavens shaking
Thinking about puddles, puddles and mistakes
Change the he to a she and you have a Dean song. It’s not quite as obvious, but this is Dean looking back on most of the mistakes he’s made and how he wishes he could change them.

5. Every Rose Has it’s Thorn ~ Poison
I listen to our favorite song
Playing on the radio
Hear the DJ say loves a game
Of easy come and easy go
But I wonder does he know
Has he ever felt like this
And I know you'd be here right now
If I could have let you know somehow
This as the title track was pretty obvious. I hemmed and hawed for a while about maybe making it something else, but in the end this was what it had to be. This song is them, no ifs ands or buts. Especially this verse.

6. This Ain’t a Love Song ~ Bon Jovi
It made me so mad 'cause I wanted it bad for us, baby
And now it's so sad that whatever we had, ain't worth saving, ohh
If the love that I got for you is gone
And if the river I've cried ain't that long
Then I'm wrong, yea, I'm wrong, this ain't a love song
If the pain that I'm feelin' so strong is the reason I'm holdin' on
Then I'm wrong, yeah I'm wrong, this ain't a love song, ooh
This song hurts when it comes to them, but it fit too much that I couldn’t not include it. Because their relationship has been so rough around the edges, and has been since the beginning. This song reflects that more than anything else.

7. Since I’ve Been Loving You ~ Led Zeppelin
Everybody trying to tell me that you didn't mean me no good.
I've been trying, Lord, let me tell you, Let me tell you I really did the best I could.
I've been working from seven to eleven every night, I said It kinda makes my life a drag.
Lord, that ain't right...
Since I've Been Loving You, I'm about to lose my worried mind.
This song stuck out to me as an Anna song, more so than a Dean song. Even if it is Zeppelin. But there was no way I could make it work for Dean, even though I tried, but it screamed of Anna, and how Dean always has to go and make things complicated.

8. Not a Dry Eye in the House ~ Meat Loaf
Act One: The story's just begun
Act Two: I fell in love with you
Act Three: Knew it was meant to be
Act Four: You don't love me no more
This is general angst. It’s got bits and pieces of both of them and how their relationship came to the end. It makes me sad as a song, but it still really works for them.
***
9. Hallelujah ~ Rufus Wainwright
There was a time you'd let me know
What's real and going on below
But now you never show it to me do you?
Remember when I moved in you?
The holy dark was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah
This song applied to so many of the mixes that were requested for me, but this one was the mix that won. Probably because it was the one that got finished first, but regardless, it really does work for them in a big way.

10. Total Eclipse of the Heart ~ Bonnie Tyler
Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I'm only falling apart
There's nothing I can do
A total eclipse of the heart
Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there's only love in the dark
Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart
I love this song. I love this version of this song. And I love the way this looks at Dean and Anna. I love the lyrics and yes, this is an overly dramatic eighties song, but would you expect anything else for Dean?
***
11. You and I Both ~ Jason Mraz
And it's okay if you have to go away
Oh just remember the telephone works both ways
And if I never ever hear them ring
If nothing else I'll think the bells inside
Have finally found you someone else and that's okay
Cause I'll remember everything you sang
This is another song I just love, and this really applies to both Dean and Anna in different ways. There are different parts that appeal to both of them and then sections, like this one, who just apply to both of them together. It’s an all encompassing kind of song, which is a good note to end on.

Why do these two have to make my heart hurt so much?
