Age: 30
Appearance:
Dean is about 6’ 1”, and a rather attractive 6’ 1” at that. He’s got “delicate features for a hunter,” and while there’s a bit of a crooked nose or crooked fingers, it’s not disfiguring. He’s got green eyes, blondish-brownish hair, and nicely built, due to years of hunting/fighting/training/etc. He usually is dressed casually, in beat up jeans, a couple layers of shirts, and some kind of jacket, usually his father’s leather one.
Dean also carries himself well—has good posture and doesn’t really slouch. He was trained as a soldier so he holds himself as one. He also knows the value of keeping still, but that doesn’t mean he’s not secretly five and will touch pretty much anything if given the opportunity.
History:
Dean Winchester was born on January 24, 1979 to Mary and John Winchester in Lawrence Kansas. When he was four years-old, his mother was murdered by a demon on the ceiling of his brother's nursery, who proceeded to light his childhood home on fire. John was able to pull Sam from the room and placed him in his brother’s arms. From that moment on, Dean took that as his job to protect his brother from whatever he could, in whatever way he could. Dean practically raised Sam by himself while John tried to hunt down the thing that had killed their mother up until Sam graduated high school, and left his father and brother in order to attend Stanford University.
Dean and Sam weren’t reunited until the beginning of Sam’s senior year, when John went missing. Dean came to Stanford to try and talk his brother into helping him find his father, and Sam agreed to go on one hunt with him in order to make sure their dad was okay. At the end of the weekend, they still hadn’t found John, but Sam returned to find his girlfriend, Jessica, murdered the same way that his mother had been—pinned to the ceiling of their bedroom before it was lit on fire. After that, Sam came back on the road with his brother, wanting to track down their father and the demon that did it in order to put an end to it once and for all. When they finally did find their father, he had been possessed by the demon in question, Azazel. Azazel used John’s body to torture Dean, causing serious internal damage. After the demon left his body, Sam was driving Dean to the hospital in order to get Dean some help when they were t-boned by a tractor trailer, leaving Dean in a coma the doctors weren’t sure he’d pull out of.
In order to save his son’s life, John sold his soul, not that his sons knew that at the time. Right before he died, John reinforced Dean’s instinct to protect Sam, but also added the caveat that if he couldn’t save him, he would have to kill him. Dean carried that secret with him for as long as he could without telling Sam, but when he finally came clean, Sam made him promise to kill him if he ever went evil as well. A few months later, Sam was kidnapped by Azazel, leaving Dean scrambling to find him. After receiving a vision from another one of the captives, Andy Gallagher, Dean made his way to the abandoned town where Sam and the others were being held. Just as Dean arrived there, however, his brother was stabbed in the back, and a few minutes later died in Dean’s arms. Shattered by the idea of having to live without his brother, who he was supposed to protect, Dean tried to sell his soul at the crossroads.
Emphasis on the word tried.
He never actually made it there. Bobby caught wind of his favorite idjit’s idea before he could actually go through with it, and stopped him, even going so far as to lock him in his basement until Dean worked through his grief the natural way, even if Dean didn’t feel that there was anything natural about it. There was a lot of yelling, a lot of screaming, and a lot of crying, and by the time that Dean was ready to actually leave the room, he had missed his own brother’s funeral. Bobby took care of it, just to make sure that Dean didn’t do anything stupid.
For the next year, Dean avoided Singer Salvage and took up hunting on his own. He didn’t have anything else left, and was feeling a tad bit suicidal. He hunted anything he could find, regardless of whether or not the thing was just trying to get by. There were a few pretty close calls before he came out of the motel one morning to find an oversized demon curled up like a ball in the back seat of his car. At first he was really pissed off and was planning on sending the son of a bitch back to Hell, but when the demon actually started to talk—Dean knew it was Sam. He wasn’t sure how or why, but his brother was a demon.
Maybe it a psychological break, maybe it was Dean’s dependency issues reaching a whole new level of screwed up, or maybe it was just the fact that he missed his brother so much that he couldn’t handle this on his own, it doesn’t really matter. He couldn’t send his brother back to Hell. Not when he could try and save him, as much as a demon could be saved. Dean threw himself into protecting his brother again, readjusting him to the world, and trying to make him better.
He arrived in Bete Noire after Sam has been missing for a few days, and he sets off to find him himself. By the time he’s arriving in the city (I was just going to have him drive in in his car), he’s going to be feeling pretty desperate and worried that Sam’s gotten himself exorcised or worse.
Powers/Talents: Dean is so human it hurts. But he does have an above average knowledge of the supernatural, badass ninja skills and the ability to use almost any kind of modern weapon.
Personality:
Dean is, above all else, family first. They are the most important and most consistent things in his life, and he’s attached to them to the point where it is unhealthy, especially considering that ninety-five percent dead. After losing his mother at the age of four and growing up with an absentee father, Dean was forced to step in as mother, father and brother to Sam, which graduated Sam to, essentially, Dean’s reason for living. While Sam always fought for a normal life, Dean mostly fought to keep his family together, hold on to the few people that he actually had in the world that weren’t constantly changing. Dean has been nomadic his entire life, traveling from town to town for as short as two weeks at a time, and didn’t even stay in school long enough to earn a diploma (he has a GED). He didn’t have very many friends that weren’t hunters, and even then they weren’t people he could confide in, and he spent most of his life lying to people—not the most conducive way to form lasting relationships.
Dean, however, is the only member of the Winchester family who doesn’t hunt out of revenge or necessity—at least in the beginning of the series. He truly enjoys the work and feels like he’s making a difference through it. While Dean has lost people, instead of blaming the thing that did it and seeking out revenge, Dean transfers the blame to himself, thinking that he wasn’t strong enough to do it. Also not the healthiest way to do things, but it’s his way of coping. When it comes to Sam, however, there’s nothing Dean won’t do. He sold his soul for his brother, and even through their trust issues, Dean would rather see his brother live than anything else.
Aside from his family issues, on the outside Dean is a snarky, friendly and flirty human being. He has a thing for one night stands (they’re about the closest he gets to a functioning relationship). He’s never been in love, never had a serious relationship. While he has had a few “girlfriends,” they never lasted longer than a few weeks, and they always came second to his family and his job. That didn’t mean that he was against long relationships, however. They just never seemed to coincide with his higher priorities, being the job and his family.
Dean is also a master at putting on a smile when on the inside he’s falling apart. Dean sees himself as a massive failure. Dean has lost everyone he’s ever cared about, either temporarily or permanently, and sees himself as someone that’s not worth sticking around for. John was an absentee father, Sam bailed on Dean to go to college, he’s never had a sustainable relationship—while he can easily project a guy with all the self confidence in the world, his self-worth is in the toilet. Dean has a lot of pride, however, and will almost never let anyone see him at his weakest. While he may be depressed and sullen, he doesn’t go fishing for pity. He’d rather fake it, if nothing else.
With this particular AU of Dean, he’s a lot more obviously broken than he is in canon. In canon, at the end of Season 5 when he finally loses Sam officially, Dean has been through a lot more where his dependency on his brother is lessened somewhat. The events of Seasons 4 and 5 do a lot to make Dean stand on his own two feet a little more and not rely so heavily on his brother and his father. This isn’t to say that he likes being alone, but he can deal with it a little better. This Dean, with no Hell, no Apocalypse, and nothing to drive a wedge between him and Sam cannot function in a world without his brother, and it shows. He lashes out at everyone around him and makes it hard for anyone at all to get close to him. He bottles the emotions away, and unleashes them on the nearest supernatural thing he can find, convincing himself that it’s just him doing his job, but often times he doesn’t care if he’s going down with them. He follows the stupid plans, does the least safe thing, because the self-loathing and regret is pretty much all he’s got left, and he doesn’t know how to do this alone.
He has a very low tolerance for anything supernatural, with the exception of Sam. Maybe it’s a little hypocritical, saying that it’s only okay when it’s his family, but Dean really doesn’t care. As far as he’s concerned, it’s the supernatural beings that did this to him, and all of them as a whole should pay for it, good or bad. He also takes his protectiveness of his brother to a whole new level of crazy, to the point where it’s almost a neurosis. Nothing can happen to Sam, because Dean wouldn’t be able to live through another failure, and now that he’s a demon, Sam is twice as vulnerable. Hunters just like him are going to be looking to put Sam away and chalk it up to a job well done, so Dean does not like to let Sam out of his sight. At all. Period. However, he knows that his brother isn’t stupid and can take care of himself to an extent, so he can loosen the leash every once in a while, so long as he knows where he is. It’s more like Dean is looking after a small child than a more-than-capable demon. And if you hurt Sam in any way? If you’re lucky, Dean will only beat the shit out of you, if he doesn’t snap completely and kill you. This demon is the last scrap of family he has left, and he will die, literally, before he’ll let you hurt them. His loyalty is to Sam, and Sam only—maybe Bobby on a good day, but it would have to be a really, really good day. Sam’s become the entirety of his focus, to the point where he ignores his own needs and desires. He wants Sam to be happy, to stay happy, and to stay with Dean. It’s stuff like this that can sometimes make Dean more worrisome than the broken demon he takes care of.
The sad part of it is, despite how neurotic he’s gotten, and the fact that his brother’s a demon, this demon is actually doing good for Dean. He smiles more, laughs every once in a while, and is a little more aware of what he’s doing before he does it. Having Sam around helps him get better, even if he’s a little bit crazier.
It doesn’t make any sense, but it’s the truth.
Also, for the record, Dean is heterosexual and very pro-sex. Sex is the closest he gets to a functioning relationship with a woman. He doesn’t stay in one place for too long, so it’s very rare that a girl will get further than a one night stand with them, but Dean will never, ever say no to a one night stand.
Why would your character be chosen?
Because he is so very pretty.
Also, Dean has a lot of heart, even if it doesn’t seem like it. He’s loyal to a fault, and will give anything and everything for the people he cares about. If you put aside the alcoholism, the bad attitude, and his lack of trust in anything, he’s really not that bad a person to be married to.
But really, it’s mostly the fact that he’s pretty.
How much does your character know about nonhumans?
Dean only knows as much as he needs to know about anything. He has a wealth of knowledge about various supernatural creatures, and how to deal with them, as well as some from types of vampires and/or demons that are not native to his universe thanks to Bete Noire, but that’s because he actually hunted them and needed to know how to kill them. He’s not a nerd, he doesn’t go out seeking information he doesn’t need. He’d rather fill up that empty space in his brain with practical things like pick up lines and weapons knowledge.
So about Nysgods, he probably knows diddly squat.
Why this character:
You all are horrible enablers.
Oh, you want a real answer?
My love affair with Dean Winchester began way back when I started watching Supernatural. I became a Dean girl pretty much instantly, and while I did grow to love Sam as much as Dean, Dean’s storyline is still the one that breaks my heart the most. I’m biased. I’ll admit it. I’ve been writing fanfiction with him pretty much since I started the show, and I first started to RP him in 2007. He’s one of my oldest muses, he has four journals, he eats my brain in a way that fairly few muses do, and I adore him for it. Even when I get musebleed so bad it makes me cry.
That being said, I’ve had fairly few opportunities to play Dean in a panfandom game setting—the first few games I tried weren’t the right fit, or they died out, I started playing his brother, or his angelic BFF. This would be an opportunity for me to get back into playing Dean on a regular basis again, as well as have him touch base with Bete Noire CR that I loved and greatly missed.
My main goal for playing Dean in jamjar panfandoms like this one, however, is to get him a taste of things he’s never going to have. He hasn’t really had a lot of people in his life, people who cared about him and actually lasted, beyond his brother. In these kinds of settings, he really gets to have a life, and not have to live through the crushing blow-by-blow that canon forces him through on a weekly basis. The problems that he has to deal with are someone else’s problems. He gets to have friends, make connections, and collect people like bottlecaps.
Also being kidnapped to be the bride of some dude will provide endless hilarity at the expense of our fearless hero. And since making fun of Dean is always a good time, I figured it’s worth a shot.
AU Addendum:
Firstly, this Dean is AU because he didn’t save his brother.
I originally came up with this AU because I picked up Dean for RP outside of my usual private circles and to force into the open world the year that Dean died and went to Hell. I wanted to play him somewhat close to canon, but in the RP circles I was in at the time, it was all canon-based RP, which is lovely, but not really going to work for a character that was in Hell. So I decided to AU the hell out of him, using Bobby to stop Dean and seeing where the fallout would land. Then a few friends of mine got in on the idea and it turned into an actual universe with things happening and a demon!Sam. After that, the rest is history.
Secondly, Dean is even more AU than that, because after all of that, his Sam went to Bete Noire, and naturally Dean couldn’t leave him alone in the city of sin. But the reason why I wanted to bring this version of Dean here is because Bete Noire actually turned out to be a real growing period for Dean. Sure he became even more of an alcoholic, maybe a little more reckless with his hunting, and learns to hate himself (as in other versions of himself) more than he hates anything else, but he also set down roots. He had friends that he cared about and cared for, he had an actual job at Hellsing that he was good at, and he was even going to have a family, before the explosion got in the way. He became more and more of a real boy.
It’s going to be kind of fun to rip some of that away from him by sending him here, and see what he does.
Past Game History:
Dean arrived in the city of Bete Noire in January of 2010. He entered a world of a multiple hims, multiple Sams, more supernatural than he would ever know what to do with, and this pull to become worse than he was. At first he made it through things by sticking by Sam, to the point where it put him at odds with the BNPD when Sam went on an evil rampage, but Sam was all he had in the city, and he was going to make damn well sure he didn’t go anywhere. As time went on, Dean made friends outside of Sam’s circle, and Sam’s friends as well, but he still kept a pretty close inner circle, especially when other Deans started showing up again. Most of his first year in this city was sent dealing with the implications of the choices his canon self made, ie. the Apocalypse and his role in it.
He was also struggling with the city’s influence itself. He was drinking a lot more than he normally would (basically passing the barrier from borderline could be alcoholic to having a glass of whiskey with his dinner every night—and sometimes more than that) and had gotten a little bit looser with which demons and vampires he would kill. He had friends who were supernatural, but they were mostly friends he made through Sam and friendships that he kept up after because Sam was gone. The only real non-human relationship that he made of his own volition was Gaila, and that was for two reasons—one, she was an alien, not supernatural, and two, she was spectacular in bed. Gaila actually grew to be one of his best friends in this city, and he will be very disappointed that she doesn’t know him here.
It wasn’t until his Sam left the city that Dean started to grow into himself a little more. Sam came and went twice before he realized that he was really gone, and after some time and denial, hoping that he would maybe get sent home to be with Sam, he realized that he was well and truly stuck here, he decided that he needed to move on and start setting down roots in the city. He needed to make a life here, not just let Sam be his. That was a major piece of growth for him, so he started to spread his attention out to other people in the city—his job at Hellsing, Ben Braedan, Diana and the canon Sam, Caroline and Elena who lived across from him upstairs, Gaila, and most importantly, Jo. While he and Jo weren’t necessarily together in every sense of the word, they cared about each other a great deal and when Jo found out that she was dead back home, she wanted to start laying down roots herself, and to have a family. Dean was more than willing to help her with that, having always wanted a family of his own, so they agreed to try. They were in the process of trying to have a baby when everything went sideways.
Somehow, Jo’s bar became the target of the anti-supernatural sentiment in Bete Noire. Odds are, they found out that Caroline, who was living upstairs, was a vampire, and the fact that Jo was harboring her made her look like a hypocrite. Dean was at Harvelle’s the night they attacked. Buffy and Cordelia arrived after Cordelia had a vision of the attack, and Dean had headed upstairs to get Elena, Caroline, and Tyler out of the upstairs apartments shortly before the first bomb went off. He survived the first blast, but was still struggling to get out of the building went the second went off, killing him, the three teenagers, Jo, Buffy, Cordelia, and another blond woman he didn’t know named Ruby.
The next thing he’ll know, he’ll be waking up in Dagaz, thinking its Bete Noire and being very confused as to why the bartenders are topless. (See: First Person sample and I apologize in advance for the language.)
4. Samples
First-Person:
[Dean is too angry for video at the moment. In fact, he’s too angry to do anything but blast the network as loudly as he possibly can. He is confused by the new network devices, and this doesn’t look exactly like Bete Noire, but Dean could have been dead for a while before the city decided to bring him back. It’s a sadistic son of a bitch like that.
So all you get, lovely citizens of Dagaz is a very angry male voice who sounds like someone who’s already present, but at the same time, maybe just arrived. While you try and figure that out, don’t mind him, he’s just going to vent a bit..]
You know what? I have had it with this goddamn fucking city, and their stupid bullshit. I’m fucking done. I’m done with your war games and your goddamn us-versus-them crap, and as far as I’m concerned, you can all shove it where the sun don’t shine. I’m out. I’m finished. And when I track down those cowardly, disgusting pieces of shit who put those bombs in my bar, you’ll be done. That’s a promise. And you’ll be done every time this goddamn city brings you back. I have a feeling that that? Is not something I’ll be getting sick of anytime soon.
[there’s a breath, followed by a slow exhale as some of the anger dissipates. But only some.]
If anyone’s looking for me, I’ll be getting a fucking drink. I’m at …
[his voice trails off as he looks for the bar name, but he eventually finds it.]
… the Serpant’s Head.
[a beat]
Whatever.
[the feed will click off for a moment as Dean goes inside, but once he spots the lovely lady hanging out behind the bar, he needs to go back to the rest of the world for a moment]
Since when does Bete Noire have topless bars?
[for the record, his voice indicates that he does not find this upgrade to be a bad thing.]
Third-Person: Bete Noire: Dean and Jo are sappy and domestic.
Third Sample Bete Noire: Dean is looking for someone.
