[fanmix] In the Light
[For
mini_dean. Yes, I know the picture isn’t age appropriate, but it’s a cute shot so there.]

1. Different Wings ~ Trans Siberian Orchestra
Wait for me now
I will be there for you
No matter what
Tomorrow may bring
This I will vow
I will be there
For this child with different wings
This song reminds me of Michael so much. Because there are points where he wishes that he was always Michael, because he would have been able to prevent things from happening to his kids. But in the end, if he was always Michael, he wouldn’t have his kids to begin with. It’s a Catch-22 he hates. This song is a lullaby, and Ben is far too old for it, but the words work.

2. Carry on my Wayward Son ~ Kansas
Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more
Predictable, I know, but necessary. It is the name of the verse, after all.

3. All My Life ~ Foo Fighters
All my life I’ve been searching for something
Something never comes, never leads to nothing
Nothing satisfies, but I’m getting close
Closer to the prize at the end of the rope
All night long I dream of the day
When it comes around and it’s taken away
Leaves me with the feeling that I feel the most
Feel it come to life when I see your ghost
This song has bits and pieces of both of them. The last four lines are purely Ben, but the first couple are more so Dean. It’s hard to pin down exactly why Dean wanted this song, but it worked, so I kept it.

4. Indiana ~ Jon McLaughlin
I wonder how it feels to be famous
But wonder is as far as I will go
Because I'd probably lose myself in all the Pictures
And end up being someone I don't know.
So it's probably best I stay in Indiana
Just dreaming of the world as it should be
Where every day is a battle to convince myself
I'm glad she never fell in love with me
This is a Ben song. It’s also a love song which doesn’t really fit for this, but it’s so much Ben that I couldn’t not include it. Especially when it comes to Ben coming back from the djinn world.

5. Whatya Want from Me ~ Adam Lambert
Just don't give up
I'm workin' it out
Please don't give in
I won't let you down
It messed me up, need a second to breathe
Just keep coming around
Hey, whataya want from me
Whataya want from me
This is another love song, but the refrain is so fitting for what Michael is trying to say to Ben right now, because he knows that if he does, it’ll just make things worse, because the only way he’d say it was if he was angry. Unfortuately.

6. More than Words ~ Rockapella
Saying "I love you"
Is not the words I want to hear from you
It's not that I want you
Not to say, but if you only knew
How easy it would be to show me how you feel
More than words
Is all you have to do to make it real
Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me yeah
'Cause I'd already know
This is pretty much Ben all the way, regarding the things he needs from Dean that he’s not getting, which is just making the rift between him bigger. This one and the one before it are about the things that they won’t say and how things are just getting bigger and harder because of it.
***
7. Like a Child ~ Royal Bliss
When you said the battle will take hold
What you say, what you do. But I didn't listen
When you told me they will lead away your mind
My best times I don't remember, I didn't listen
I hate to say you were right, I can't win every fight
I could have died, I wish I listened
I’m not sure which one of them this song works towards, but this song seems to encompass their whole relationship for me. It’s got a hard sound to it, but the words hit something for Dean, whether it’s in the direction of his father (John, not God) or Ben at Dean, or even Dean at Ben. It just works everywhere.

8. Hollywood Ending ~ Motley Crue
Did you want it this way
Breaking us down a little bit at a time
Is it easier now that I'm not around
Oh, is it time to draw the line
We don't have to pretend
You got your Hollywood ending
This goes back and forth as to which boy it’s about for me too. Because Dean feels this way when Ben’s off at Stanford trying to put distance between them, but Ben can feel the same way at times. So back and forth, and things they won’t say because they’re Winchesters and don’t talk.
***
9. Bring Him Home ~ Les Miserables
Bring him peace
Bring him joy
He is young
He is only a boy
You can take
You can give
Let him be
Let him live
If I die, let me die
Let him live
I think this is relatively self-explanatory, and applies to both his sons, but is especially relevant to Ben at the moment, given everything that they’re going through.

10. In the Light ~ Led Zeppelin
Oh, did you ever believe that I could leave you, standing out in the cold
I know how it feels 'cause I have slipped through to the very depths of my soul.
I just wanna show what I'd give you it is from every bend in the road
Now listen to me
Oh, whoa-whoa, as I was and really would be for you, too, honey
As you would for me, oh, I would share your load.
Let me share your load. Ooh, let me share, share your load
I know that I also put this song on the Dean & Cas mix, but this really, really fits for Dean & Ben too, especially in Wayward. This song is everything that Michael wants to say to him but can’t because he’s Michael and a Winchester and therefore deficient at communication.
